Male Rhinoplasty Procedure, Recovery and Cost

October 15th, 2009 No comments

Over the last decade, cosmetic surgery or as it also called plastic, became quite popular. Ever since the stars from Hollywood started getting younger every year, this habit has grown quite a bit amongst everyday people as well. Cost of surgery dropped significantly in the last couple of years which made this entire area of medical industry more accessible to the average Joe.

One of the most popular is definitely a rhinoplasty procedure. In the past, this and all other types of esthetic operations were usually performed on women. Since women are the symbol of beauty this was very logical and widely accepted thing. But in recent times, number of men who have done and plan to do these types of “makeovers” has grown relatively high. Today it is absolutely expected that a man takes care of his appearance. Therefore male rhinoplasty surgery became very popular as well.

Fast and demanding life style, as we are witnessing it today, left the individual with no choice. Either you are going to join the race or will be left on the margin. Modern society, unfortunately, is based on competition. We witness this every day in our work places, television, schools, relationships, etc. The ordinary man has no other option than to start to work on himself. Fitness was reliable weapon for a long time but now that is not even enough anymore. A person to be accepted in various social positions is required to have “good looks”. Constant progress of science methods shifted the whole story in higher gear and introduced a powerful weapon called plastic surgery. We are going to focus here on rhinoplasty – nasal (nose) surgery.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty Procedure Surgery Operating Room

A male rhinoplasty is an operation performed on the nose, in this case, of a man with the goal of improving appearance of facial features or removing deviations, caused by various reasons (birth defect, injury, and breathing obstructions). Problems like deviated septum (septoplasty) fall under the category of functional surgery and not under cosmetic surgery like rhinoplasty does. But both of them are referred to as the nose surgery. It is very common to perform multiple procedures alongside rhinoplasty. Patients sometimes require septoplasty, eyelid corrections, chin augmentation and other.

Male rhinoplasty doesn’t differ much from the female version, so all this information can be beneficial to both sexes in spite of the fact that this article covers male’s point of view.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. Although in certain cases general anesthesia can be applied as well.

During operation, the nose is approached in two ways: closed and open. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made only inside the nose, which as a result won’t create any visible scaring after surgery and will heal much quicker. In open rhinoplasty, an additional incision is made across the skin that separates the nostrils. After that the soft tissue and skin are separated from the cartilage and bone beneath, which are then reshaped. Surgery is finished suturing the incision.

Non Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non surgical rhinoplasty is performed without surgical means in oppose to surgical. Nose is reshaped with injectable substances without anesthesia.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Difference between usual and ethnic rhinoplasty is that the nose is altered in such way that ethnic specific features remain intact and at the same time esthetic corrections are made to achieve better appearance. Since there are many ethnic groups, explanation of procedure steps for every single ethnic group would be too long. We will just mention that throughout the World, most requested types are Asian rhinoplasty and African American rhinoplasty. Again, as with all groups, here also women dominate, but ethnic male rhinoplasty steadily continues to grow in numbers.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

One to two weeks is the estimated time for rhinoplasty recovery. Although it is better to be on the safe side and avoid any strenuous physical activity or exposure to sun for about 3 to 4 weeks just to make sure that everything heals properly and avoid the possibility of an injury. During the first two weeks the swelling, bruising and bleeding is a normal thing and can occur, especially during the first few days after the surgery. Make sure you change the gauze regularly and avoid aspirin and ibuprofen. To reduce the swelling you can use cold compresses or try to elevate the head.

For the first seven days you will carry a nasal splint in your nose to hold the cartilage and bone while the nose heals properly. On the second week a tape will be applied for another seven days. Many clinics discharge their patients home on the same day, which tells you how efficient rhinoplasty surgeons became today.

To prevent any possibility of infection on the operated area you will be given certain medications (antibiotics and steroids). Also, for the pain, on your request, you may be prescribed some painkillers. Although, often they are not necessary, because the pain diminishes quickly. As you can see rhinoplasty recovery is a quick and fast process.

Rhinoplasty Revision or Secondary Rhinoplasty

Primary rhinoplasty is actually male rhinoplasty performed for the first time. Rhinoplasty revision is another rhinoplasty performed to correct an unwanted outcome from a previous one. Statistics can vary but revisions are done in 5% to 20% of the cases. Secondary rhinoplasty can be very complicated. Because the nasal framework has often been destroyed or damaged from previous operation, experts must reconstruct the nose support structures using cartilage grafts from either the ear or from rib cartilage. This is the reason why most revisions are done using the open approach. This allows the surgeon to directly visualize the deformity. Advances in surgery techniques, now allow adequate results with secondary rhinoplasty that were not possible in the previous years.

The Best Rhinoplasty Surgeons

Pre-operative phase is very important, because it involves searching and choosing for what you think is the best rhinoplasty surgeon. Make sure you do a thorough investigation of available clinics. Good doctor will create an entire project explaining to you what you can expect and what the possible risks are. Stay away from experts that are not methodical.

The Cost of Rhinoplasty

Both male rhinoplasty and female will cost approximately the same – somewhere around $2500 to $5000. The cost of rhinoplasty will depend on the amount of work done. For example, if approach to the nose required more time, material and surgical effort, price is likely to go up. Also, less known and experienced surgeons will charge less. Just make sure you don’t end up smart priced for such investment.
